News Around Town

School Starts August 31!

Shopping News:  Rumor has it that the empty space in the old Ames store (Route 131) may soon be filled.  Both Tractor Supply Co. and Ocean State Job Lot have interest in the space.  Also, plans are under way for the creation of a garden store on Route 15.  These three additions to our commercial base are most welcome.

New Subdivision in Planning Stages:  A preliminary subdivision plan has been submitted for Long Pond Estate, to be located at Route 20 and Camp Road.  This would be a 26-lot subdivision.  Public hearing scheduled for 8/24/10 at 7:30 pm.

Streeter Beach is open for the 2010 summer season!  Cost is $5, or purchase a season's pass for $35. Did you know that Streeter Point Recreation Area is managed by the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation?  Here is a list of all the beaches managed by DCR.  The $35 pass will get you into all of these beaches - what a great deal!

Four Points of Interest:  Sturbridge made the recent list of 1000 Points of Interest in Massachusetts with four entries:  the Publick House, Wells State Park, our historic village center, and Old Sturbridge Village.

Congratulations to Russ Penny and the Re-Opening of Penny's Appliance on Route 20!

Praise to Yankee Spirits for its donation of funds for preservation projects in the area.

Welcome to New Town Administrator, Shaun Suhoski!

Sal's Pizza Update:  Ah...we've had a lot of inquiries about Sal's Pizza on Route 20.  Well, word on the street is that the Sturbridge location of Sal's Pizza will be opening in August.  Better start dieting now, because they serve up one big pizza!

Traffic Info via 511:  If you are traveling on the Mass Turnpike or other major highways, you can check traffic conditions by dialing 5-1-1.  This service has just been made available for the entire state - a fantastic help for summer travelers.

Beach News:  Great news - Streeter Beach, which was closed last summer, will be open for the summer of 2010.  Hours will be from 11 am to 6 pm.

Town Hall Renovations:  The Town Hall and Center School are under re-construction.  The interiors will be gutted, and then structural renovations will begin.  Town Hall offices are temporarily located at Old Sturbridge Village.

Road Construction:  Construction is under way again along Route 131/Main Street.  Please drive carefully and watch out for workers (and potholes).
